The andraz castle and the mines of fursil

The castle is located just below the Falzarego Pass is about 20 minutes from Selva di Cadore in a strategic position to control communication routes in the Middle Ages connected the Belluno territories, then the Serenissima ( Venezia Region), with those located a north of Caprile, belonging to thw Bishop of Bressanone.
Along this street was passing the iron from nearby mines of Fursil Colle Saint Lucia, at that time Bishop's territory. The Mines of Fursil were the most important in the Dolomites territory and a first ironworking took place in the neighboring valleys and then was forged in the smithies of Agordo, Belluno, Zoldo and Bressanone to make fine blades for swords. Even today you can visit some mines in the village of Colle Santa Lucia.
The Castle of Andraz instead was built on a huge boulder detached from the Dolomite Settsass group, made with rocks that were found on site, this characteristic gives it extraordinary integration with the surrounding natural environment and increases the charm.
The building, from the eleventh to the fifteenth century, was under the control of the vassals of the Bishops dependencies, after 1416 took possession directly to the Bishopric that throughout the Middle Ages made it an important military bastion.
