There are two different techniques.
The classic technique, in which the skies are kept parallel and you travel within beaten tracks, is more suited to fairly flat terrain, less so for up and down-hill stretches and tight bends. In skating technique the skies do not travel on tracks but glide alternately.

Cross-country ski trails for the classic technique have tracks to facilitate the thrust of the ski for greater speed and safety. Trails for the skating technique, on the other hand, need only a compacted snow surface. When people try cross-country skiing for the first time they are pleasantly surprised by the peaceful nature of this activity since it takes place in the heart of the pristine snow-covered landscape and in dense silent woodland. This sport oxygenates the body and the mind, relaxing all the senses.

In the Cadore Dolomites area you can do cross-country skiing on the Pista Deona in Cibiana di Cadore, at an altitude of 1535 metres above sea level. The trails run inside the Cibiana pass and are considered among the most scenic cross-country routes in the whole of the Belluno Dolomites. Pista Deona has a number of ring-shaped trails of different lengths, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7.5km, all of average difficulty. The shortest trail is 2 km long and fully lit, so you can do this sport at night-time, a particularly magical experience in the bosom of nature under the starry sky.

Mountain style Restaurant, Baita Deona is located at Passo Cibiana, between Monte Rite and Sassolungo peaks.
