The Optical and Eyewear Museum
The Museo dell’Occhiale opened in 1956. It was the dream of the academic Enrico De Lotto to set up a national eyewear museum in Cadore, that area being famous as the home of the optical industry. Situated in Pieve di Cadore, at Palazzo Cos.Mo, it houses a collection of over 4,000 exhibits that tell the story of this essential visual accessory from the past to today. Visitors are offered two themed routes for exploring this rich heritage of products and documents. The first floor contains a collection of curiosities and items associated with the world of lenses and spectacles such as pince-nez, cords, cases, fans and walking sticks concealing spy-glasses, binoculars, telescopes, monocles and magnifying glasses, most of them in frames encrusted with precious stones. The second floor contains a comprehensive display of documents, photographs, interviews, historic film clips and machinery that tell the story of the optical industry from the late 19th Century to today.
The Museo dell’Occhiale can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday in the morning from 09:30 to 12:30 and in the afternoon from 15:30 to 18:30. For more information www.museodellocchiale.it
