Castelletto of Tofana di Rozes

Cortina

The Castelletto is located close to the Tofana di Rozes and is a rock drilled and dug out by the armies during the Great War, so much so that it became a sort of war condominium with Austro-Hungarian tunnels on the summit and Italian tunnels on the slopes of the mountain.

The Castelletto can be reached by leaving the car at the Rifugio Dibona and following the path marked 403 and then 404 on the western slope right at the base of the Tofana (about 1 hour).

You can venture into the mine tunnel, over 500 metres long, which was the protagonist of the most famous episode for which the Castelletto is known: the explosion of the Italian mine on 11 July 1916.

Once out of the tunnel, you will find yourself at Forcella Col dei Bos and can descend into Val Travenanzes or go back down. For the more intrepid, on the other hand, the demanding Giovanni Lipella via ferrata starts here, circling the imposing Tofana di Rozes.
