Edelweiss and Vonbank posts

Cortina

The Edelweiss Post on Sass de Stria is a historic outpost that can be reached by walking along several well-preserved trench paths and barracks from the Great War. These were occupied by the Austro-Hungarian army and prevented the Italians from entering Val Badia.

Another Austro-Hungarian emplacement to visit in the Sass de Stria Open-air Museum of the Great War is the Tre Sassi emplacement, later called Vonbank after the Commander: an Austro-Hungarian defensive trench with emplacements, still preserved in excellent condition and easily passable.

Between Sass de Stria and Lagazuoi, the Vonbank Post thwarted Italian attacks from the Falzarego Pass. In October 1915, Cengia Martini, which is located on the Lagazuoi exactly above the Vonbank Postation, was occupied by the Italians and this inevitably meant that the post became a continuous target.
