As every year, the Siorpaes family of the Averau Hut inaugurates the winter season with...the devils!
According to an age-old Ladin and Tyrolean tradition associated with the feast of St. Nicholas whose origin lies in the distant past, at the beginning of December people dressed as Krampus parade through the centre of the villages and, approximately from 10 a.m. to 2 p,m., also around the Averau Hut, scaring spectators.
While St. Nicholas rewards well-behaved children with gifts, the Krampus wanders around in search of bad children.
This half-goat, half-demon monster is an ugly and terrifying figure. It wears furs, its face is covered by wooden masks with horns, and it walks around making a lot of noise with bells and rattling chains.
Over time, this tradition has developed into an attraction for visitors of all ages. Attending the parades is a great opportunity to get a close look at this ancient and mysterious tradition that has been part of local folklore for ages.
The frightening wooden masks are veritable sculptures, often the work of talented local artists.
The event is organized in collaboration with the groups "Hydentaler Krampus" and "Anpezo Teufel" of Cortina d'Ampezzo, who have joined together since 2022 and become the "Anpezo Teufel".
