Routes that enable you to discover the “Pale Mountains” and their legends: a maze of paths through nature and history revealing some of the most attractive, and often unfamiliar, aspects of the Dolomites.

In fact, Cortina d’Ampezzo is the location of the Great War Open-air Museums, the most extensive museum area dedicated to the First World War in the Dolomites. On these mountains, the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies fought the War from 1915 to 1917.

Those tragic events have been commemorated by the creation of the largest museum focusing on the First World War, comprising the Lagazuoi, Cinque Torri, and Sass di Stria open-air museums, and the Forte Tre Sassi museum.

The museum area extends over an area with a radius of 5 km, and it enables visitors to learn more about the various aspects of the Great War in the mountains, on one of the most evocative walks in the Dolomites, amidst trenches, tunnels and bivouacs.

Hike to Rifugio Nuvolau

A circular walk to the Ampezzo valley’s first mountain lodge.

Cinque Torri tour

An easy walk along the trenches of War World One, surrounded by stunning landscapes.

A walk to Forcella Zumèles and Val Padeon

After a section running through a larch forest, the route climbs up to a gully with fine views over the Ampezzo valley, and then continues in a hidden valley between Cristallo and Pomagagnon.

On the front line: Lagazuoi and Forcella Travenanzes

A walk on the tracks crossing the front lines of the First World War.

Hike to Sass de Stria

An easy but very rewarding walk for the fantastic views from the peak, and the evocative visit to the trenches and outposts dating back to the Great War.
